Care Leavers

Young people who have been in care can benefit from a range of additional support from North Somerset Council. This includes council tax exemption and tailored help into education, employment and training, please view our Local Offer booklet for more information.

We take our responsibilities as your Corporate Parents seriously, we are committed to the following principles, as we will:

• act in the best interests, and promote the physical and mental health and wellbeing, of our children and young people
• encourage our children and young people to express their views, wishes and feelings
• take into account the views, wishes and feelings of our children and young people
• help our children and young people gain access to, and make the best use of, services provided by the local authority and its relevant partners
• promote high aspirations, and seek to secure the best outcomes, for our children and young people
• help our children and young people to be safe, and to have stability in their home lives, relationships and education or wor
• prepare our children and young people for adulthood and independent living.

The Care Leavers Forum suggested that a leaflet with a clear explanation of support available to care experiences young people in North Somerset would be useful in helping them understand their entitlements.
