The school serves the Catholic community of Portishead and surrounding areas, as well as an increasing number of non-Catholic families in the locality.
St Joseph's is a voluntary aided primary school, which was originally established as a private school by the Sisters of La Sainte Union in 1906. The school is on a flat site with a brand new building with up-to-date facilities, level playgrounds and a grass playing field. The school aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum. A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered at lunchtime and after-school. These activities include football, netball, cricket, hockey and rugby, swing band and gospal choir. The school aims to enable every child to reach his or her potential in a caring and supportive environment. St Joseph's is proud of inclusive provision which offer a myriad of opportunities of each child.
