Ruskin Mill College

Ruskin Mill College follows a unique ‘Practical Skills Therapeutic Education’ curriculum to support young people with learning difficulties and emotional and social difficulties to develop skills needed to live a more independent life.

Each Student has an individual Study programme which includes a range of land and craft activities as well as Mathematics and English that promote personal and social wellbeing.

This Study programme is reviewed regularly throughout the course and while focusing on the Student’s agreed outcomes will be flexible in order to enable the Student to reach their full potential.

Set on a 140 acre site, the college offers over 60 different subject activities including farming, animal care, woodland management, horticulture, iron age forge, green woodwork, textiles, drama, cooking, pottery, art, sport and independent living skills.

Qualifications offered include a range of BTECs as well as NVQs and NPTCs.  Should a qualification not be offered by Ruskin Mill College, we will ensure that the Student has access to an external course through a local provider or college.

To prepare for life after college, Ruskin Mill College has an extensive work experience provision and all students are encouraged and supported to engage in internal or external work experience during their placement.

A two bedroom training flat on the College grounds provides the Student with the opportunity to improve their independent living skills by spending time on their own or with another student in the flat as part of their transition and preparations for leaving college.

Each Student leaves with a Transition passport developed by the Student themselves with the support of their Student Journey Manager.  The Transition Passport includes key information such as the Student’s achievements –v- the agreed outcomes set at the beginning of the course, their needs and interests, contacts, behavioural and care plan.

The majority of Ruskin Mill College students progress on to Supported Living, often in their home area and will attend a part time course at the local FE college while either volunteering or working part time.

Ruskin Mill College employs a diverse, experienced team that support learning skills, therapies, teaching, speech, medical and psychological needs.

Our team of experts provide ongoing assessments and support.

As well as the time tabled activities, our team also assists the students with issues such as healthy eating, smoking and hygiene.

Group sizes are small, usually 3 per session but additional one to one learning/behaviour support is provided for those students that might need it.

Ruskin Mill College can accommodate up to 105 Students of which 85 can be residential.

Programmes are aimed at Students between the ages of 16 and 25.

The placements range from 1 – 3 years and run for either 36 or 52 weeks.
