Derwen College is based in Gobowen, near Oswestry for day and residential students and has satellites for day students in: Walford near Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Telford.
Awarded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted at three consecutive inspections, Derwen College provides a rich learning environment for young people, aged 16-25 with many conditions, including learning and physical disabilities, ASD, medical needs and behaviours of concern.
Derwen College’s specialism is building employability skills through authentic work opportunities in onsite commercial outlets and off-campus with partners in the wider community. The vocational options offered are designed to meet industry standards, preparing students for the job market.
At the main site, the Pathway options offered include: Hospitality and Food; Horticulture; Performing Arts; Retail and Enterprise; and Learning for Life. At the satellite sites, options include: Sports and Fitness; Horticulture; Business Support; Sales & Marketing; Hospitality; and Vocational Skills and Business.
Individualised learning includes a comprehensive Personal Development and Independence programme. Students are supported to begin learning to care for themselves, shop, cook, develop road safety skills, extend their abilities in inter-personal relationships and take their place in society.
At Derwen College, we believe that students develop their independence best when they work on it in a real environment.
Springboard is an alternative bespoke programme with a focus on work and independence skills for young people preparing for the next stage of their lives. The programme is for adults aged 18 to 28 with special educational needs or disabilities. The elements and duration of the package are developed around individual needs.
