Diabetes Specialist Service
Our diabetes service provides education, information and support on diabetes to individuals, their carers and healthcare professionals. The service has a variety of structured education opportunities for people living with diabetes.
Diabetes Structured Education
Our Diabetes Structured Education courses provide information and guidance to enable people to self-manage their condition and live the life they want to lead. Click the blocks below to find out about the courses available near you, or to get in touch with our teams to find out more.
Oviva diabetes support
A 12 week programme for people living with type 2 diabetes who would prefer one-to-one specialist support, and for those who normally would require a translator.
The programme offers a range of support using a blended approach of self-led learning via an app and personalised coaching from a Diabetes Specialist Coach. This programme is able to support people in a range of community languages, and aims to help people to learn more about their condition and to support long lasting lifestyle and behaviour change.
How do I access this service?
The Diabetes and Nutrition Service accepts referrals from any healthcare professional for Diabetes education courses, self-referral for the Diabetes education courses can be considered. Type 2 diabetes Peer Support
If you have type 2 diabetes, Brigstowe’s peer mentor service can help you take control of your health.
Their peer mentors also have type 2 diabetes and want to meet with you to share their own experience of living with the condition. They will provide you with information and support to help you learn more about diabetes and live well.
You can meet with the same mentor weekly who will:
- Listen to the challenges or obstacles you may have
- Share their own experiences with you of what has helped them
- Provide you with information about type 2 diabetes
- Support you to identify goals and work towards them together
- Our mentors can offer both in–person* and online support.
*Please Note: In line with our COVID-19 risk assessment and government guidelines, we are now offering the option of in-person mentoring meetings as well as digital support through online video chats.

- Weston-Super-Mare Diabetes UK: Telephone support is available from a diabetes specialist nurse or Diabetes UK member. Diabetes UK awareness events in the Weston area are advertised locally and advice and information can be obtained at these events. Peer Advisors in Diabetes
Peer advisors are volunteers with diabetes who have undergone training to help others and can offer advice, reassurance and support. For further information call 07586 320 855.
How do I access this service?
To access this service you need to be referred by a healthcare professional or GP.
Cancelled / missed appointments
If you cannot make your appointment, we require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice to reschedule your appointment. Please contact us on 01275 885 166. You may be discharged if you miss any appointments without letting us know, or if you cancel appointments more than once.
A discharge letter will be sent to your GP who can re-refer you if they feel this is appropriate
