Out of school and holiday childcare 2021

Out of school care offers breakfast clubs, before and after school sessions, holiday care or holiday playschemes.

Holiday playschemes are planned activities for children during school holidays. The schemes offer a wide variety of activities, with an emphasis on activities and play.

Holiday playschemes have to be registered with Ofsted if:

  • The total care provided is for more than 2 hours in one day and more than 5 days a year.
  • Holiday playschemes do not have to be registered with Ofsted if they only provide care for children above the age of eight.

Some of the schemes only run for a short period, for one or two weeks and only a few hours a day, but there are many that will be able to provide full time cover during the school holidays.

If the provision is run either by a school or registered with Ofsted you may be able to use Tax Credits or Tax Free childcare to help pay for it.
