Going out, socialising and making friends
Getting out and about, taking part in activities and events is a great way to do things with friends or as a family.
You may want to visit leisure centres or visit a park or beach. You can find out more about these on our website Some activities may require you to be with an adult, but others are definitely for you, on your own, especially as you get older. You might find that the activities you enjoy change as you grow up. But it is good to carry on doing something, even if you are busy with schoolwork or health concerns, as activities are really good for you!
Some people or organisations like employers, shops, local authorities and schools must take positive steps to remove the barriers you face because of your disability. This is to ensure you receive the same services, as far as this is possible, as someone who's not disabled. The Equality Act 2010 calls this the duty to make reasonable adjustments. The Citizens Advice website has further information on this.
You may be interested in our short breaks, or want to book a holiday specifically for young people with additional needs.
Many clubs and activies are open to all however you may be happier if a buddy goes along with you. The Buddy Scheme is designed to provide a service to children and young people with a range of additional needs to support them in accessing social and leisure activities in the community, for example youth clubs.
You can join the safe places scheme which is run by Avon and Somerset Constabulary.
